Pearson VUE's Maine outlines give the general portion as 80 scored items across eight areas and the Maine law portion of the sales agent exam as 40 scored items across five areas (2, 15, 10, 8 and 5, in the outline effective September 1, 2026). The real exam also carries 5 general and 5 to 15 Maine law pretest items that are not scored; the timed exam here draws only the scored items, in those counts, and runs the two portions as one timed exam in the combined time the handbook gives them.

2How the Maine sales agent exam works
- Two portions. The sales agent exam has a general portion of eighty (80) scored items and a Maine law portion of 40 scored items, plus five (5) pretest items on the general portion and 5-15 pretest items on the law portion that do not count. You get 2.5 hours for the general portion and 1.5 hours for the Maine Law portion.
- Passing score. The Commission, with Pearson VUE, set the passing score at a scaled 75, reported on a scale of 0-100. The handbook says the score should not be interpreted as the percentage or number of questions answered correctly, so the timed exams here score you against a study target instead.
- Retakes. You may retake the exam before the expiration date of the Course Completion Certificate, and Course Completion Certificates are valid for one year. Pearson VUE gives you the required portion(s) of the exam automatically.
- Fee. The examination fee is $88.

3A sample Maine question
This is one of the Maine questions in the pass, shown with its explanation and the law it comes from.
A real estate sales agent is to represent a seller client of her real estate brokerage agency solely, to the exclusion of the other affiliated licensees of that agency. Under Maine law, who appoints her as the appointed agent?
- The designated broker of her real estate brokerage agency
- The Real Estate Commission
- The seller client, by a written designation filed with the commission
- The director
Answer and explanation
Answer A: The designated broker of her real estate brokerage agency
Maine defines an appointed agent as an affiliated licensee appointed by the designated broker of that licensee's agency. The appointed agent acts solely for a client of the agency, to the exclusion of the agency's other affiliated licensees. The client does not make the appointment, and neither the commission nor the director does.
