1What is in the pass
- Timed exams, as many as you want. Each one is 150 questions in 3 hours, drawn at random across the DRE's content areas in the shares the DRE publishes, with questions you have not seen yet served first. You get your score against the 70% pass line and a breakdown by area, the same way the DRE reports a failed exam.
- Practice by topic. Pick any of the 8 national content areas or a California area, or the questions you missed last time. The right answer and the reason appear as soon as you answer.
- California questions with their law cited. 125 questions on California rules: agency disclosure, trust funds, advertising, disclosures, licensing and continuing education, and more. Each explanation names the Business and Professions Code section, Civil Code section, regulation or DRE page it comes from, with the date it was read.
- National questions to the outline. 400 questions on the principles every state tests, weighted to Pearson VUE's national content outline, down to each sub-topic. They include the 80 on the free practice exam.
- Your weak topics, tracked. Every answer is recorded in your browser, so the app can show your accuracy by topic and send you back to the areas below the pass line.
| DRE content area | Share of the exam | On each timed exam | Questions in the pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Practice of real estate and disclosures | about 25% | 38 | 91 31 California |
| Laws of agency and fiduciary duties | about 17% | 26 | 61 21 California |
| Property ownership and land use controls | about 15% | 22 | 129 19 California |
| Property valuation and financial analysis | about 14% | 21 | 82 17 California |
| Contracts | about 12% | 18 | 75 15 California |
| Financing | about 9% | 13 | 41 11 California |
| Transfer of property | about 8% | 12 | 46 11 California |
| All areas | 100% | 150 | 525 |
The shares are the DRE's approximate weights for the salesperson exam. A timed exam here rounds them to whole questions, and each national question counts toward the DRE area it belongs to (for example, appraisal toward valuation, deeds and closing toward transfer of property).

2How the California salesperson exam works
- Length. 150 multiple choice questions in 3 hours, each with four choices. The DRE's outline covers the whole exam in seven content areas, from practice and disclosures, the largest at about 25%, to transfer of property at about 8%.
- Passing score. At least 70% of the questions answered correctly. Candidates who pass are not told their score; those who fail get their score and the percentage correct in each subject area.
- How many pass. In August 2026, 51% of salesperson exams were passed.
- Retakes. There is no limit on the number of examinations during the two-year period after you file the original application.
- Calculators. Only silent, battery-operated, non-programmable pocket calculators without a print-out or alphabetic keyboard are allowed, so practice the math by hand or with a basic calculator.

3A sample California question
This is one of the California questions in the pass, shown with its explanation and the law it comes from.
A prior occupant died in a home five years ago. During a showing, the buyer asks the listing agent directly whether anyone has died on the property. Under Civil Code section 1710.2, which statement is correct?
- The agent may answer that no one has died there, because the death was more than three years ago
- The section does not protect the agent from making an intentional misrepresentation in response to a direct inquiry about deaths on the property
- The agent must disclose the death only if it was violent
- The buyer has no right to ask, because deaths are never material facts in California
Answer and explanation
Answer B: The section does not protect the agent from making an intentional misrepresentation in response to a direct inquiry about deaths on the property
Owners and agents are not required to volunteer a death on the property that occurred more than three years before the buyer's offer. That rule does not let anyone lie. The section expressly does not protect an intentional misrepresentation made in answer to a direct question about deaths, so the agent may not falsely say no one died there. The statute draws no line between violent and other deaths for this purpose.

Questions people ask
- What does the California Exam Prep Pass include?
- 525 original practice questions: 400 on the national principles every state tests and 125 on California law and DRE rules. You get unlimited timed exams of 150 questions in 3 hours, drawn at random in the DRE's area weights, practice by topic with instant explanations, and a record of your scores and weak topics.
- Do I need an account?
- No. After you pay, your private access link appears on screen and is emailed to the address you gave at checkout. The link is your login on any device. Keep the email.
- How long does access last?
- 12 months from the day you buy. It is a one-time payment, not a subscription, so nothing renews or charges again.
- Are these the real DRE exam questions?
- No. The real questions are confidential, and using actual exam questions to prepare candidates is against the law (Business and Professions Code section 123). Every question here was written for this site, the national ones to the Pearson VUE national content outline and the California ones from the Real Estate Law, the Commissioner's regulations and DRE pages, each cited.
- Is this affiliated with the DRE?
- No. Agent Licenses is an independent study aid. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the California Department of Real Estate (DRE). The questions are exam practice written from official sources, not legal advice.
- Where is my progress saved?
- In the browser you practice on, tied to your access link. Nothing about your answers is sent to us. If you switch devices, your history starts fresh there, but your access does not change.
