How to become a real estate agent in Rhode Island

This page is independent of any school or brokerage. Requirements change (dbr.ri.gov refuses automated readers, so its forms come from Internet Archive captures dated in the sources (the salesperson application is the December 2023 revision) and Pearson VUE's handbook is its January 2026 edition; the DBR's pages state no minimum age, so none is quoted here), so each section names the official page it was read from and the date. If a figure below disagrees with the DBR's page today, the board is right and this page is stale: the date tells you how stale.

1Rhode Island real estate licence requirements

• Course: a certificate of completion of 45 hours of pre-licensing education for salespersons from a DBR-approved school.
• Lead course: a 3-hour Lead Poisoning and Lead Hazard Mitigation certificate from an approved course.
• Exam: a pass on the national and state parts of the Pearson VUE exam before applying, with the original score report filed; the application must be filed within one year of passing, counted from the later part.
• Background: a Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation check from the Rhode Island Attorney General's office; non-residents add a criminal history record from their home state.
• Insurance: a certificate of errors and omissions insurance.
• Character: a notarised application with Rhode Island residents attesting to the applicant's reputation and recommending the licence, and full answers to every question.

2Steps to get your Rhode Island real estate licence, in order

1. Complete the 45-hour course and the 3-hour lead course

   Both from DBR-approved schools; the approved school and course lists are linked from the application.

2. Book and pass both parts of the Pearson VUE exam

   The national part is 80 questions in 2.5 hours for $53 and the state part 50 questions in 1.5 hours for $50, each with pretest items; a scaled 70 passes each, and a failed part is retaken alone.

3. Get the BCI check and errors and omissions insurance

   The BCI check comes from the Attorney General's office at 4 Howard Avenue, Cranston; the insurance certificate goes in with the application.

4. Mail the application with two cheques totalling $165

   $140 to the RI General Treasurer and $25 to the Real Estate Recovery Account, with the score report, certificates, BCI check and insurance; the DBR asks for 7 to 10 business days to process and the handbook says about three weeks.

3How much a Rhode Island real estate licence costs

The DBR prints its fees on the application and Pearson VUE its fees in the handbook; the BCI check, insurance and tuition are paid to those providers.

4How long it takes to become a real estate agent in Rhode Island

The fixed parts are 48 course hours, one Pearson VUE sitting of four hours, the BCI check, and a mailed application the DBR says takes 7 to 10 business days and the handbook about three weeks; the application must be filed within a year of passing. Those parts come from the DBR's own forms and the exam vendor's handbook, not a school's marketing:

• Courses: 45 hours plus the 3-hour lead course at approved schools, at their pace.
• Exam: 2.5 hours for the national part and 1.5 for the state part at a Pearson VUE centre, in English or Spanish.
• Background check and insurance: BCI check from the Attorney General and an errors and omissions certificate.
• Application: mailed within one year of passing; 7 to 10 business days by the DBR's estimate.

5The Rhode Island real estate exam

The salesperson exam is 130 questions in 4 hours, two parts, national (2.5 hours) and Rhode Island state (1.5 hours), at a Pearson VUE test centre, available in English or Spanish. You need a scaled score of 70 on each part to pass. Passing results are valid for one year from the passing date; the original score report goes in with the application. Retakes: a candidate who fails the general or state part retakes that part; the application must be filed within a year of passing both, counted from the later date.

6Reciprocity: already licensed in another state?

With Connecticut and Massachusetts, plus Florida by mutual recognition. A non-resident of Connecticut or Massachusetts with an active salesperson licence applies on the reciprocal form with a BCI check, a home-state criminal history record, the 3-hour lead certificate, errors and omissions insurance, a letter of good standing and the same $165 in fees, without the Rhode Island exam; a Florida resident does the same after passing the state part of the exam.

7Renewal and continuing education

The licence runs two calendar years from the anniversary of the issue date. To renew you complete 24 clock hours of approved continuing education within the licence period and pay $130 on time, or $130 for a salesperson, plus a $100 late fee to reinstate after the expiry date late.

First renewal: the same 24 hours as every renewal; reciprocal licensees from Connecticut and Massachusetts and Florida mutual-recognition licensees are exempt.

Later renewals: 24 hours of DBR-approved continuing education in each two-year period, nine of them core instruction including three hours of fair housing, with errors and omissions insurance kept current.

8How much real estate agents make in Rhode Island

The only independent, dated wage figure for agents is the Bureau of Labor Statistics' occupational survey. For Rhode Island, release May 2025:

BLS counts agents paid as employees and reports wages, not the commissions of self-employed agents, so these are a floor for the occupation rather than what a typical commissioned agent takes home. BLS suppressed Rhode Island's employment count in this release.

A new salesperson licence is only usable under a broker, so the next decision is which brokerage. On September 5, 2026, 1,705 Rhode Island agents had a published brokerage profile; the largest single company was RE/MAX with 544 of them, and the largest brand was RE/MAX with 544.
