1What is in the pass
- Timed exams, as many as you want. Each one is 120 questions in 150 minutes, with the national portion drawn across PSI's national content areas in their published shares and the state portion in the item counts PSI's Virginia outline gives, so a full timed exam is 80 national and 40 state questions, with questions you have not seen yet served first. You get a score for each portion against its own pass line: national portion 56 of 80, state portion 30 of 40.
- Practice by topic. Pick any of the 8 national content areas or a Virginia area, or the questions you missed last time. The right answer and the reason appear as soon as you answer.
- Virginia questions with their law cited. 137 questions on Virginia rules: who needs a license, renewal and continuing education, supervising brokers, records and prohibited acts, escrow funds, the Residential Property Disclosure Act, resale certificates and advertising, standard and limited service agents, dual and designated agency, fair housing, condominiums, security deposits and the utility damage prevention act, and more. Each explanation names the Code of Virginia section or Real Estate Board regulation it comes from, with the date it was read.
- National questions to the outline. 400 questions on the principles every state tests, weighted to Pearson VUE's national content outline, down to each sub-topic. They include the 80 on the free practice exam.
- Your weak topics, tracked. Every answer is recorded in your browser, so the app can show your accuracy by topic and send you back to the areas below the pass line.

PSI's Virginia bulletin gives the national portion as a share of the exam for each content area and the state portion as item counts for salespersons: 8, 2, 10, 12, 4 and 4 of the 40 state items. A full timed exam here draws 80 national questions in those shares (rounded to whole questions) and exactly 40 state questions in those counts; you can also time each portion on its own.

2How the Virginia salesperson exam works
- Two portions. The salesperson exam has a national portion of 80 questions in 105 minutes and a state portion of 40 questions in 45 minutes, 150 minutes when you take both. PSI may add one to ten unscored experimental items, which count against your time.
- Passing score. You need 56 correct on the national portion and 30 correct on the state portion. Each portion is scored on its own, and you must pass both portions to apply for a license.
- Licensed elsewhere. If you apply by reciprocity, only the state portion must be passed.
- After you pass. Your completed license application and fee must be received within 1 year of passing the examination. The exam fee is $60.

3A sample Virginia question
This is one of the Virginia questions in the pass, shown with its explanation and the law it comes from.
A salesperson who works as an independent contractor for a firm wants to advertise listings on a personal website. Whose policies govern this advertising?
- The salesperson's own written policies, because the salesperson is an independent contractor
- The policies of a principal or supervising broker
- The policies of the local multiple listing service only
- No policies apply, because the website is personal
Answer and explanation
Answer B: The policies of a principal or supervising broker
All advertising by an affiliated licensee must be done under the policies of a principal or supervising broker. Being an independent contractor does not let a salesperson set separate advertising policies. Advertising on a personal website is still advertising by an affiliated licensee, so the broker's policies apply.
