1What is in the pass
- Timed exams, as many as you want. Each one is 142 questions in 270 minutes, with the national portion drawn across PSI's national content areas in their published broker shares and the state portion in the item counts PSI's South Dakota outline gives, so a full timed exam is 90 national and 52 state questions, with questions you have not seen yet served first. You get your score against the 75% pass line and a score for each portion, since each portion is passed separately.
- Practice by topic. Pick any of the 8 national content areas or a South Dakota area, or the questions you missed last time. The right answer and the reason appear as soon as you answer.
- South Dakota questions with their law cited. 129 questions on South Dakota rules: the commission's powers, revocation and the recovery fund, who needs a license and the exemptions, broker associate education, renewal and continuing education, errors and omissions insurance, agency agreements, seller's, buyer's and limited agents, appointed agents and transaction brokers, adverse material facts and confidential information, unprofessional conduct, advertising, closing statements, trust money, the residential real property disclosure statement and property managers, and more. Each explanation names the South Dakota Codified Laws section or Commission rule (ARSD 20:69) it comes from, with the date it was read.
- National questions to the outline. 400 questions on the principles every state tests, weighted to Pearson VUE's national content outline, down to each sub-topic. They include the 80 on the free practice exam.
- Your weak topics, tracked. Every answer is recorded in your browser, so the app can show your accuracy by topic and send you back to the areas below the pass line.

PSI's South Dakota bulletin gives the national broker portion as a share of the exam for each content area and the state portion's items by area: 4, 6 and 42. A full timed exam draws 90 national questions in PSI's shares (rounded to whole questions) and 52 state questions in those counts; you can also time each portion on its own. The real national portion includes scenario questions with up to eight options scored up to two points; every question here has four options and one point.

2How the South Dakota broker associate exam works
- Two portions. The broker associate takes the broker exam: a national portion of 90 (100 points) items in 150 minutes and a state portion of 52 (52 points) items in 120 minutes. PSI may add a small number (5 to 10) of experimental questions that are not scored but count against examination time.
- Passing score. Each portion has a passing score of 75%. Candidates who pass one (1) portion of the examination and fail the other need to retake only the section they failed.
- Fee. PSI charges $105 for one portion or the combined state and national exam.

3A sample South Dakota question
This is one of the South Dakota questions in the pass, shown with its explanation and the law it comes from.
A licensee is acting as a transaction broker. The buyer asks the licensee for strategy on pressuring the seller into accepting a much lower price. Which statement is correct?
- The licensee may advise the buyer because the buyer is the licensee's client
- The licensee may advise the buyer if the seller orally agrees
- The licensee may advise the buyer if the buyer signs a written request
- The licensee may not advise any party to the detriment of another party
Answer and explanation
Answer D: The licensee may not advise any party to the detriment of another party
A transaction broker does not represent either party as an agent, and South Dakota law forbids a transaction broker from advising any party to the detriment of another. Coaching the buyer to pressure the seller would harm the seller. The buyer is a customer, not a client, in a transaction brokerage, so the first option is wrong.
