Pearson VUE's Montana outlines give the national portion as 80 scored items across eight areas and the Montana portion of the salesperson exam as 40 scored items across four areas (3, 3, 28 and 6; the broker-only area is not on the salesperson exam). The real exam also carries 5 national and 10 state pretest items that are not scored; the timed exam here draws only the scored items, in those counts, and runs the two portions as one timed exam in their two times added together.

2How the Montana salesperson exam works
- Two portions. The salesperson exam has a national portion of eighty (80) scored items and a state portion of forty (40) scored items for salesperson and broker candidates, plus five to ten (5-10) pretest items on the state portion that do not count. The handbook's table gives the times: Time Allotted 150 minutes 90 minutes. The national and state portions of the examination should be scheduled separately, but they can be taken concurrently, if desired.
- Passing score. The table lists Passing Score 75 75 75 75 for each exam, a scaled score that is neither the number of questions answered correctly nor the percentage of questions answered correctly, so the timed exams here score you against a study target instead.
- Results and fee. Exam results are good for three (3) years from the date of passing the exam. Each exam costs the $95 examination fee.

3A sample Montana question
This is one of the Montana questions in the pass, shown with its explanation and the law it comes from.
Under the board's rules, which of the following is listed as unprofessional conduct for a Montana licensee?
- Engaging in activities that constitute the practice of law
- Advising a client that outside professional services should be secured when appropriate
- Disclosing licensee status at first contact with a property owner
- Declining to conduct a title search at the initial listing
Answer and explanation
Answer A: Engaging in activities that constitute the practice of law
Montana's board rules expressly list engaging in activities that constitute the practice of law as unprofessional conduct. Licensees must leave legal work to attorneys. The other choices describe things a licensee is required or allowed to do. Advising parties to seek outside professional help is a duty, not a violation.
