Pearson VUE's Kansas outlines give the general exam as 80 scored items across eight areas and the Kansas exam for salesperson candidates as 30 scored items across five areas (2, 4, 5, 8 and 11; the broker-only area is not on the salesperson exam). The real exams also carry 5 general and 10 Kansas pretest items that are not scored; the timed exam here draws only the scored items, in those counts, and runs the two exams as one timed exam in their two times added together.

2How the Kansas salesperson exam works
- Two exams. Salesperson candidates take a general exam of eighty (80) scored items and a Kansas exam of 30 items for sales candidates, plus five (5) pretest items on the general exam and 10 pretest items for salesperson candidates on the Kansas exam that do not count. Candidates have 2.5 hours to complete the general exams and 1.5 hours to complete the state exams.
- Passing score. The Commission set the pass line with Pearson VUE: With a passing score of 70 on a scaled score that is neither the number nor the percentage of questions answered correctly, so the timed exams here score you against a study target instead.
- Fee. The exam fee is $70 per exam scheduled.

3A sample Kansas question
This is one of the Kansas questions in the pass, shown with its explanation and the law it comes from.
How does a broker designate one or more affiliated licensees to act as legal agent of a buyer client or seller client to the exclusion of all other affiliated licensees?
- By giving the client oral notice at the first showing
- By filing a designation form with the commission
- In a written agency agreement
- In the contract for sale after the offer is accepted
Answer and explanation
Answer C: In a written agency agreement
A broker, or the broker's authorized licensed representative, designates the designated agent in the written agency agreement with the client. Oral notice is not sufficient. Naming the designated agent only in the sales contract comes too late, because the designation is part of setting up the agency relationship itself.
